An update from The Montreal Presbytery Haiti Relief Group

An update from
The Montreal Presbytery Haiti Relief Group

It has been two months since we last reported at Presbytery as to the work of our group and we want to take an opportunity to share that work with all our churches and ministry sites. In April we announced to the Presbytery that our relief and long-term area of focus would be three-fold. Our initiatives would include:

  1. The Dominique Literacy Centre in Saint Roc, Haiti;
  2. purchasing of “Air Mobile Water Purification” Systems for Haiti
  3. Long term school project with our Methodist partners in Haiti

The Dominique Literacy Centre is an initiative of Claire Cameron, a member of our committee, and her husband Franz Dominique whose father was killed in the earthquake on January 12, 2010. The centre bears his name and is in his memory. Currently the centre provides a learning opportunity for 24 students; employment for two teachers; and one hot meal per day for each of the students and staff. If we consider this more carefully, we must understand that 24 children are now learning to read and write; 24 children have a place to be instead of wondering around; their parents are free to pursue work or help others; the teachers are able to provide for themselves and their families; the hot meal ensures each person affiliated with the school has one, hot, quality meal each day; and those who make the food are also provided with employment and means to help their families. And so the circle continues….. Please consider making a donation which will help us help this Literacy Centre continue to make a difference in the lives of individuals.

Air Mobile Water Purification System is an incredibly powerful and very portable purifier that efficiently produces safe, clean potable water free of sediment, lead, bacteria, viruses and parasites from untreated water sources such as streams & ponds. This system can be solar powered for use in isolated areas (such as where our Literacy Centre is located) and can produce 22 - 25 gallons of water per hour! What a difference this will make in the everyday lives of our Haitian brothers and sisters. Please consider making a donation which will help us provide clean drinking water - something we take for granted and for others it is a luxury.
Long term school project with our Methodist partners in Haiti Two members of our committee will be going to Haiti in August to meet with our partners and learn more about the opportunities available for us to help the people of Haiti in a long term, sustainable and practical manner. Please consider making a donation which will help us learn more and provide long-term sustainable options in Haiti.

So, what are we asking?

We are asking:
  1. You to donate (in order to receive a tax receipt, please make cheques payable to Beaconsfield United Church directing the funds to “Haiti Relief Initiative”.
  2. Your congregation to consider making a donation through its Outreach fund.
  3. Your congregation to host a fundraising event with the proceeds being directed to the “Haiti Relief Initiative”. (A Concert; Dinner; Coin collection jar, etc.)
  4. Tell your friends, your co-workers and your family about these hands on, direct ways of reaching out to others. Each dollar donated is a dollar at work. Each dollar that will provide education, employment, water, food and supplies to people in Haiti.

We invite you into this work!

Haiti School Initiative

New! Haiti School Initiative

From the Montreal Presbytery Haiti Response Committee

Months after their initial response to disaster, relief workers often report an effect termed crisis fatigue. The public becomes immune or appears to be numbed to messages of ongoing need. This is a result partly of the understandable imbalance in the information highlighted by media sources.

The Montreal Presbytery ad hoc Haiti response committee is firmly of the belief that a concrete on the ground project would effectively draw support and interest without depressing or alienating public response and concern for the continuing plight of Haitians.

In view of this stance, the committee has committed to undertake a project to erect one or more schools in two potential areas of Haiti. Some local benefactors have made available a tract of land and a dwelling where the projects can be developed.

As the sustaining and responsible group from the Montreal Presbytery, this group will secure the funding, work with or establish a new foundation and set up other material corroboration to create one or two elementary schools of 6-7 classrooms each, with teachers, books and supplies, lunch and uniforms.

Each school building facility would represent a $50 000 expense which would include materials for construction and salaries for construction workers.

The group also views it essential to ensure the sustainability of this project for a minimum period of two to three years. That means guaranteeing supervision, agreeing to assure ongoing supplies and capital for paying salaries, and overseeing the quality of the various elements of the school or schools.

A team will travel to Haiti in the near future to solidify plans. We invite you into this project as a resource person, consultant, by providing financial or other guidance or if you would just like to learn more about the project, please contact

Cindy Casey through e-mail at: bu1@bellnet.ca

Your prayer support would be a caring gesture in proceeding with this project.

For Immediate release March 24 2010

MONTREAL PRESBYTERY OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA CALLS ON CANADIAN GOVERNMENT TO DO MORE TO ASSIST HAITIAN FAMILY REUNIFICATION.

The Montreal Presbytery of the United Church of Canada called upon the Canadian government today to do more to assist Haitian-Canadians and Haitians residing in Canada seeking status, who are attempting to be reunited with family members affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

“Canada has a proud humanitarian tradition with regards to its response to humanitarian disasters”, said Cindy Casey, Coordinator of the Montreal Presbytery Haiti Response Group, at a news conference held in Montreal today. “The response to the 2004 Tsunami is a recent example. We believe that a similar response is warranted with respect to the situation in Haiti.”

The measures suggested by the Montreal Presbytery of the United Church of Canada today include:

1. Broadening the definition of the family members who can be sponsored. Québec has recently announced measures to permit the sponsorship of adult children as well as adult brothers and sisters. We believe that a Haitian-Canadian living in Ontario, Alberta or anywhere else in Canada should have equal rights to Haitian-Canadians living in Québec, and that such provisions should be extended to the rest of Canada.

2. Regularizing the immigration status of Haitians residing in Canada who have been refused refugee status, but have been living in limbo for many years. The current moratorium on removals to Haiti prevents them from being deported, but the inconsistencies and expense involved in applying for permanent residence on humanitarian grounds have meant that many are still without permanent residence. This prevents them from even applying to sponsor family members.

3. A waiver of all immigration fees for persons who have been seriously and personally affected by the disaster, just as was done in response to the Tsunami.

4. Flexibility with regard to the requirement of documents such as birth and marriage certificates (many of which have been destroyed).

5. Flexibility with regard to medical exams, allowing applicants to be admitted to Canada to undergo their exams here, where justified by urgency.

The Montreal Presbytery of the United Church of Canada announced a nation-wide campaign to press the Canadian government to adopt such measures. Congregations across Canada will be asked to each send a letter outlining these requests to their local MPs. Copies of these letters will then be submitted to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Mr. Jason Kenny. The first instalment of these letters will be sent to the Minister on May 5, 2010.
